British Radio Restoration Information Sites

Jonz Valve Page
An interesting website including repair information and photos of his collection. Written in an enjoyable informal style.

Adrian's British "Battery Portable" Tube Radio Pages
A British site (despite the name) specialising in battery valve sets. Items of interest include details of various methods of powering this type of set, restoration details and historical information.

Classic Wireless
A well presented site containing plenty of information about sets form the 30s through to the 60s, with a strong bias towards Murphy's! Unlike a lot of radio sites, the emphasis here is on information rather than pretty pictures, however there are ample picture to illustrate the text.

Keith's Old Radios
A small collection with brief details about the restorations, information about Keith's early days and amateur radio activities. An interesting read.

Allan's Virtual Radio Museum
An interesting site containing pictures and information (including restoration stories) about several broadcast receivers and a similar quantity of military/communications sets. The true stories and grumbles are worth reading. Also contains a really useful index of radios included in the Newnes Radio and Television Servicing series of books, up to the mid-70s.

Tony Thompson's Vintage Radio World
Plenty of good restoration and technical information here, as well as designs for a battery valve radio power supply, a dummy aerial and a signal injector/tracer. Publisher of the "Vintage Radios" book reviewed elsewhere on my website.

Malcolm Bennett's Vintage Radios
Restoration information, reviews, etc. Also contains lots of Wanted and For Sale adverts, placed mainly by private collectors. Some good bargains to be had!

Alan Lord - Vintage Radio Collection
A British website containing practical hints and tips about radio repairs and restorations! Also contains information about TRF sets.

Past Times Radio
As well as sets for sale and details of the company's restoration services, this website includes a dial glass scan library and designs for test equipment to build.

British Wireless Set Database and Galleries
Searchable database of British radios by manufacturer and valve types. Still fairly new, and maybe a bit confusing, but definately worth a try.

Dave's Rust 'n' Dust Homepage - Murphy-Radio.co.uk
A new website by a Murphy collector. Contains circuit diagrams of a number of Murphy sets, together with some original Murphy publicity material. The whole site has a nice period feel.

Duncan Amps - Tube Data
A superb online database of valve data. Just enter the valve number and it gives you all the essential data, together with links to other available online data. Also lists equivalents and other valves with the same base connections. Despite the title, this is British!

Vintage Components
A compilation of information and articles covering British, French, German and American vintage radio components, with a bias to the 1930's and Art Deco. Also the home of the Gizmo AM transmitter and the Mozart audio compressor.

Alan Bain's Wireless Information
Currently a single page, but bound to grow with time.

The Vintage Radio Emporium
Very stylish, but lacking on real content.

British Television Restoration Information Sites

Old Tellys Website
A new Vintage Television site by a UK collector. Contains some useful information, as well as some amusing sections! Highly recommended.

Mikey's Vintage Television Website
Plenty of information about vintage television and early Philips video recorders. Plus photos of his house, car, family, cat... :)

405 Alive
Tons of really good general restoration and collecting information here. Start with the FAQ section. This site was originally created by Andy Emmerson and is now incorporated into the BVWS website.

Television History
Recommended by a website visitor - I haven't really looked it it myself yet....

British Audio/Hi-Fi/Amplifier Restoration Information Sites

Restoration of a Leak Stereo 20
Just as the title suggests! There is nothing else there, but if you are interested in valve amps it's worth a look. It's hosted on Yahoo-Geocities so you can expect the usual adverts and script errors!

Tubetec
Description from the owners - make up your own mind: "Guitar amps, studio equipment and audio custom designed and built to your specification. We also specialise in amplifier repair, service & modification including complete electronic restoration and rebuilding of vintage amps. Our aim is to design modern valve circuitry that can produce the warmth and beauty of the vintage valve sound but with the precision, clarity and fast response of modern transistor equipment.

British Museum and Gallery Sites

Early Wireless
If you like crystal sets and 1920s radios, you find several to drool over here. Recently moved and relaunched - update your Favourites!

Jonathan's Vintage Wireless Collection
A large interesting collection maintained by a British collector.

Novelty Radios
A vast collection of interesting novelty trannie radios. Click RADIOS on the front page, then click the pics for more!

Robert's Radios
An interesting collection of mainly early transistor radios, by a British collector. Still somewhat under construction (I think it is one of those sites that always will be!), but looking good. Now has its own domain and is growing fast!

Darren and Russell's Collection
A single page on a website concerned mainly with model railways. This page contains pictures and descriptions of the radios and other related items in their collection.

Andy Beer's Website
An interesting site covering vintage televisions, videos, radio, telephones and many other bits and pieces.

Old Sad Things
A collection of old test gear, video equipment, personal organisers, calculators, 8-track cartridge players etc.

Mike's Radio Page
This new website contains a small collection of mainly British sets. Unfortunately some of the images are fairly poor quality, but worth a look none-the-less. Hosted on Freeservers, complete with the inevitable popup adverts.

Mike's Vintage Radios
Photos of sets in Mike's collection and unrestored sets for sale.

Paul's Radio Museum
A small collection of sets built in the 30s 40s 50s & 60s. RealAudio files of stations broadcasting to the UK from the 30s to the 60s. Doesn't seem to have been updated - ever.

British Historic Sites

Marconi Calling
An online museum based on the unique archive held by Marconi Communications. Dedicated to Guglielmo Marconi and the company's early history, the collection is a treasure trove of equipment, photographs and documents that only a few have ever seen. The website is built using Flash and is visually impressive, but the navigation takes a bit of getting used to! You also have the option to view a more basic HTML version, which I found easier to use.

Fifties and Sixties
An interesting reflection of everyday life in the 50s and 60s.

History of PA (Public Address)
It's produced by Yaxleys Sound Systems, but it's a very well presented general PA history site. Indeed you need to look in the About section to find out who runs it!

Museums

British Vintage Wireless and Television Museum
Owned by Gerald Wells and based in Dulwich, London. Open by appointment only. The website includes a number of photos of the museum as contact details.

Ye Olde Hurdy Gurdy Museum of Vintage Radio (Dublin)

British Radio Stations

Saga Radio
Three FM radio stations (and hopefully more in the future) which plays the sort of music our vintage radios want to play. If you are in the West Midlands, East Midlands or Scotland they are definately worth a listen. The website contains program listings, presenter profiles, and also information about Saga's digital radio broadcasts (PrimeTime Radio) on satellite and DAB.

European Sites

Radiopistoia.com
An interesting and nicely designed Italian website (in English and Italian) containing photos of sets, schematics, etc.

Mario's Philips Pages
A very comprehensive catalogue of Philips sets, sorted by model number. Data includes valve types, descriptions and photos where available. The site also includes data on Philips dial lamps.

World of Wireless
This Dutch site has an interesting history section, as well as sections covering the identification of European and American sets.

www.ve301.de
German site containing information and schematics for the German VE301 sets.

Gerard's Radio Corner
This site has recently moved and been updated - the layout and navigation system is certainly improved. There are some snippets of good techincal information, hiding in there somewhere! There are plenty of European sets to look at too. The layout is still rather dated, but it is worth spend some time looking round.

This new listserv has been established by Andy Emmerson for collectors, historians and anyone interested in vintage wireless. The subject matter is expected to be primarily UK domestic broadcast receivers. This is a new list and anyone interested is encouraged to subscribe and get involved!
To subscribe send an email to vintagewireless-subscribe (at) egroups.com. To unsubscribe send an email to vintagewireless-unsubscribe (at) egroups.com. To post messages, send them to vintagewireless (at) egroups.com.

UK Vintage Radio email list
I have found that the list tends to concentrate more on military and amateur equipment, rather than domestic broadcast sets.
To subscribe visit http://ukvintageradio.listbot.com and enter the details requested. Once you have signed up you will receive information about posting messages etc.

405-Chat email list
This email list is primarily for discussions about vintage television equipment. Although I am not a collector of vintage televisions, I still find the discussions on the list interesting. There are only a few messages a week, so it doesn't clutter up your email too much. To subscribe send a blank email to 405chat (at) oldtechnology.net with the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject. To unsubscribe send a blank email to 405chat (at) oldtechnology.net with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject. To post messages, send them to 405chat (at) oldtechnology.net.

rec.antiques.radio+phono newsgroup
Although predominently American, a lot of information is exchanged on this newsgroup that will be of interest to us in the UK. There is also an FAQ for the newsgroup at http://www.xs4all.nl/~tgale/oradio/, which contains a lot of useful information.
