Free Screen Saver

Just for fun, I have created a free screen saver containing 50 photos of various vintage radios. Many of the photos are from this website, and a few have been found around the Internet. The screen saver is suitable for Windows 95/98/NT4/2000/ME/XP systems only. I recommend a screen resolution of 800 x 600 or higher, at 16 bit colour (High colour) or better.

Do not expect professional quality images. The photos are the same sort of quality as you will find on this website (but bigger), and the radios are old and have their flaws. Remember, it was done for a bit of fun and it is free!

Downloading and Installing

To reduce the download size as much as possible, the screen saver has been packed in a ZIP file.

A number of suitable unzipping programs are available. Probably the most popular is WinZip. WinZip is a shareware program and is available for download from http://www.winzip.com. Windows ME and XP have some basic support for ZIP files, as do some of the utility and desktop enhancement packages available. Simply extract the file to a convenient location on your hare drive.

When unzipped, you will have a file called vintage-ss.exe. Double-click on this file to install the screen saver. You will be asked if you wish to set it as your default screen saver - answer Yes.

It will then open the Screen Saver section of the Display Properties. Click on 'Settings...' and the screen shown here will be displayed.

Redraw Speed is how often the image changes - I suggest around 3 to 5 seconds.

Shuffle Images displays the images in a random order - I would turn this on.

Use Effects causes the program to use cross-over effects between images - nicer than just changing from one image to the next. I would turn this on too, unless you have a slow (under 200MHz) PC.

Resize Images to Fit to Screen does what it says. If you are running at 1024 x 768 or higher I would leave this off, because the images can appear a bit blocky when enlarged. At 800 x 600 it can be turned on, and at 640 x 480 you will need it on otherwise the images will be too big for the screen.

Note that the Sounds and Music and Registration sections are disabled - there are no sounds and the screen saver is free!

The file size is about 1.65MB. To download it please click on the link below
